10 Common Handler Error Faults

The following areas discuss common handler error faults when handling a detection canine. The reader will soon learn, if not already experienced, there are many pitfalls a handler can encounter when handling their canine. At times the areas discussed may seem unrecognizable and insurmountable by a novice handler. Handler Error Definition - “A verbal or physical communication by the handler, which when interpreted by the K9 will lead the K9 to manipulate the handler and / or not detect the odor for which it has been trained to detect.”

Experience has shown that by establishing and applying a consistent maintenance training program, these areas of handler error are easily understood and correctable. The experienced canine handler will quickly recognize that there are many situations that can lead to handler error; the following areas are identified as being the most problematic.

1. Poor leash handling skills.

2. Poor detailing skills.

3. Unable to read your canines change of behavior.

4. Conducting little or no search pattern.

5. Cueing the Canine.

6. Failure to consider environmental factors. (Lack of knowledge of odor.)

7. Handler doesn’t hold canine accountable.

8. Preconceived idea by the handler that odor is present or not present.

9. Belief the canine should do all the work.

10. Handler attitude.
